Abstract
A clinical and statistical observation was made on 61 cases of empyerna in infants and children,. admitted to Pusan Children¢¥s Charity Hospital during January 1, 1965 to December 31, 1966 with_ the following results.
1) There has been a definite increase in staphylococcal empyema during the past 2 years, but decrease in other bacterial empyema.
2) There was a predilection of staphylococcal empyema in infants under 1 year of age (44%). accompanied with a higher mortality rate in same age group (75%).
3) Stanhylococci were most sensitive to new penicillin (100%) such as O-Lenin, Oxacillin and Methicillin, but usually resistant to penicillin G (33%), streptomycin and sulfonamides. In recert. years, the organisms appear to be developing resistance to erythromycin arid chloramphenicol.
4) The most effective treatment for staphylococcal empyema in infants and children has been directed to the combined administration of antibiotic agents including a new penicillin with closed surgical drainage for the selected cases.
